When I go into a craft place like Michaels, a few things happen: my heart rate slows, my mouth drops opens a little, my eyes glaze over, and there’s a white noise of generalized desire in my head.
Each aisle brings a new flurry of these thoughts: ‘I wonder if that would stick to this?’…’I wonder what would happen if I put that in the oven and melted it a bit?’…’What would that look like with fur fabric covering it?’
The aisle that most often causes me to come to a complete stop and just sort of stand there, staring, is the Floral Section.
Thing is, I’m not really one for big floral displays. Firstly, I don’t have the skills to make it not look lopsided; and secondly, I don’t have enough flat surfaces to display them.
I’ve been trying to think of something to go over our bed (see previous attempt that had to be turned into coasters). As it’s for over our bed, I want it to be a bit romantic but not super girly. In fact, of the two of us, I’d say my boyfriend is more sentimental. But I’m not entirely dead inside. . .
So when I saw a pair of little birds in the floral department, I thought I could work with that.
I got a plain canvas and painted it a neat sky blue color:
Then I got some fake branches (I believe real ones would be even better, I just don’t have ready access to well-shaped and easily available bits of tree). I superglued them to the canvas, but only in a few places so the branches still popped out a bit.
Then, I clipped the pair of little birds to the branches to represent us in all our cuteness & hung it over the bed:
Simple. It pleases me.
Anything this simple ever made your bedroom ‘just so‘ where before it had been ‘not right‘ somehow? Let me know.
Chirp,
Em.

I like that your questions, when you see something in Michael’s, are “What would happen if I melted that a bit?” and “How would that look with fur?” It reminds me of the David Sedaris story when he says something like, “My dad found a little black thing in his suitcase that he didn’t recognize, so he put it in his mouth.”
If there is any way I can be like David Sedaris, i’ll take it gladly.
It pleases me, too. How very special that is, not soppy, not too sweet, just stylish, natural, and good all over. Hooray for you!
Bless you, sometimes my crafts are only something a mother could love, so good thing your around.
Sorry, also meant to compliment you on the background, just enough blurry texture to make it look like proper sky. Gorgeous shade of blue.
